Mastering Systems Security Engineering with the Cybersecurity One Framework (CS1F)

Course Overview

Mastering Systems Security Engineering with the Cybersecurity One Framework (CS1F)

In today’s interconnected and complex digital landscape, ensuring the resilience of mission-critical systems is paramount. Our 5-day intensive course focuses on building your expertise in Systems Security Engineering (SSE) through the Cybersecurity One Framework (CS1F) methodology. You’ll learn how to integrate cybersecurity from the ground up in system design and engineering processes, ensuring robust, secure, and resilient systems across their entire lifecycle.

Course Overview:

This course provides a deep dive into SSE using the CS1F methodology, which aligns cybersecurity risk management with systems engineering processes. You will gain the skills needed to define, implement, and assess cybersecurity within a system’s lifecycle to ensure that systems meet their Cyber Mission Assurance (CMA) requirements. By the end of this course, you’ll be equipped to manage cybersecurity risks using a structured approach that integrates security into every phase of system development and operation.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand SSE Fundamentals: Learn how Systems Security Engineering fits within the broader Systems Engineering (SE) discipline to ensure systems are resilient in the face of cybersecurity threats.
  • Master the CS1F Methodology: Gain proficiency in using the Cybersecurity One Framework (CS1F) to guide cybersecurity risk management throughout the SE lifecycle.
  • Develop Mission Protection Needs: Identify and document cybersecurity threats and loss consequences for systems of interest (SOI) through mission analysis and system architecture design.
  • Define and Validate Cybersecurity Requirements: Learn how to derive System Cybersecurity Requirements (SCSRs) that form the backbone of secure system design, and validate them to ensure mission assurance goals are met.
  • Conduct Cybersecurity Assessments: Perform progressive assessments to ensure systems are designed, implemented, and tested to meet CMA targets, from design through final acceptance.
  • Achieve Authority to Operate (ATO): Understand the process of preparing and achieving ATO for secure systems, and the required steps and artifacts needed for successful implementation.

Course Structure:

  • Duration: 5 days (40 hours) of interactive lectures, worked examples, and assessments.
  • Format: The course combines theory with practical application, using the CS1F methodology to walk through real-world systems security challenges.
  • Prerequisites: A basic understanding of Systems Engineering (SE) and Systems Security Engineering (SSE) is recommended.

Course Content Includes:

  • Systems Security Engineering (SSE) in the Systems Engineering (SE) lifecycle
  • CS1F methodology for cybersecurity risk management
  • Mission Protection Needs and System Cybersecurity Requirements (SCSRs)
  • Security Architecture design and validation
  • Cybersecurity Assessments and Reviews
  • Preparing for and achieving Authority to Operate (ATO)

Textbook:

The course follows the guidelines of NIST SP 800-160 Vol 1 (2018) and ISO 15288:2022 standards, ensuring a solid foundation in industry-recognized best practices.

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed for systems engineers, cybersecurity professionals, and project managers responsible for integrating security into complex systems using a proven methodology. By the end of this course, you will have a strong command of Systems Security Engineering using the CS1F methodology, equipping you to ensure the security and resilience of mission-critical systems against modern cyber threats.
